Alternative staffing, contract staffing, temp-to-perm, direct hire... these terms pop up more and more in today's hiring marketplace.
Alternative staffing is just another way of saying "contract staffing." Times have changed and contract staffing is often seen as a better fit for employers and candidates rather than the traditional direct hiring.
In this 2011 economy, companies often prefer to temporarily hire an individual for a specific project, to meet a deadline or to fill in for an employee on leave. Contract staffing ("alternative staffing") eliminates the usual overhead costs for a company (like healthcare and other benefits). Companies can also use contract staffing as a way of trying out a candidate before hiring -- as in a temp-to-perm situation.
